IICT Institute in Hyderabad Developed Rechargeable Magnesium Battery
IICT is the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have been developed a rechargeable magnesium battery and the discovery was officially announced by the ICCT under the council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
The discovery announcement was announced on 3rd September 2014. The rechargeable Magnesium battery was developed by a team led by
Vatsala Rani. The battery is a substitute to lead acid battery and has
advantages like eco-friendliness and is cost effectiveness as compared
to conventional lead acid battery.
About the battery:
- The new battery utilizes Eco friendly materials such as the Natural graphite as the Cathode and the magnesium as the anode.
- The battery replaces the highly toxic Acid batteries.
- The battery with the natural Graphite as the cathode was safe.
- The magnesium ions discharge in to the Natural cathode during discharge and in reverse condition when in charge.
- The electrode materials are reusable and also degradable.
- The cycle life of the battery was established to 800 to 900 cycles.
